This program will be initiated from a training base in Chengdu in collaboration with CURA. The training center is in the Living Water Garden, an urban model of sustainable water treatment. The training center will be in the EE facility in the Living Water Garden and in 2000 sq ft will host a comprehensive water museum, inter-active computer learning center and a lecture/film facility.

Goals:

Find a new way for environmental education projects to fit into the economic development in rural China.

Train three university students to become experts in community conservation education and sustainable development in Chengdu.

Encourage local people to participate in the conservation and development in their own area.

Plan:

First announce there is an opportunity for university students to participate in a real rural conservation education program. Students will apply for this project as a team of three. Four teams for a total of twelve students, who are the short listed candidates, will have the basic environmental education training on water and community development. They will also have a chance to visit this eco-village personally and get first hand experience, which will help them to revise their proposal. Only one team will be chosen to implement their project in the eco-village with the seed money provided.

Roots & Shoots from the Jane Goodall Institute will keep providing environmental education expertise and support the skills necessary for students to work their best on this project. All people and children in this village will be highly engaged with university students and other community development projects that will be supervised by the Chengdu Urban River Association.

Partner Organizations:

Green SOS -- will help to publicize this project among universities in Chengdu, help to identify university students who are suitable for this project.

Chengdu River Association -- will provide environmental friendly facilities to this eco-village, like a bio-gas station and will offer office space for Roots & Shoots for free.
